with everything we have looked at recently in relation to being bored and video blogging and things of that nature i thought that my personal project could explore the interactive boundaries between the artist and his medium (in this case digital graphics created on computer) by using a sort of video blog format where the artist appears bored in a video and begins to connect to the digital world in a surreal manner.

This is video is kind of crappy but the concept behind it is cool i think!

A history of evil

The film was intended to show what people have believed in and pointed to as evil throughout history. It was meant to get you to think about what evil really is. It is meant to show that when we get too obsessed with "evil" we might end up taking part in it ourselves.

One has to separate evil and human cruelty. Human cruelty is people not being nice to one another. Evil is soemthing else, it is something we have created, a word and a concept for things that are not acceptable. It is a label for things that we do not understand and dont want to understand.

But is evil really ever a complete explanation for anything?

A lot of bad deeds has been done in the name of good. The people that did them ment good, are they evil?

We are now officially Seven Dollars and Five Cents Artists, i will upload the concept behind the group asap.

Start making work for the blog is our first job, this will continue for the duration of the project but the Mixed with media exhibition deadline is friday week, so get to work (am mainly telling myself this)!!

Next the Vid Blog is on, we have a Madison, I am waiting for the concept form concept team and will go over it with Gerard this weekend for filming early next week!

Subculture - Emo, Hip Hop and Bogan

These three subcultures are the most seen and probably well recognised subcultures in Australia.

Bogan – a slang that describes a person who is stereotyped to be lower-class, less educated. The things bogans pursue in purchase are also stereotyped to be cheap. However, this is only stereotypical, today’s bogans have changed considerably. They are a lot socially aware, they follow popular culture, meaning they’ll spend most of their earnings on popular items even if they don’t really like it themselves, for them this is to show a sense of class. I personally think they are the most easily conveyed people when compared to other subcultures that have trends, rules and guidelines. They are rather more free flowing, following which ever direction people in the marketing industry take them.

Emo – a term that describes hardcore punk fans. It originally stated in Washington D.C, where the word Emo was short for “emotional punk”. As many of us know, they are very similar to Punk, they have a very restricted boundary towards what to and not to do. Stereotypically however, we often assosciate Emos with tight jeans, very long fringes brushed to one side of the face (covering one eye), studded belts, tight t-shirts with their favorite rock bands, skate shoes and dyed hair. Although the emotional side of a Emo has stereotypically changed in recent years, the fashion trend has seen very slight changes meaning it’s still very easy to distinguish a Emo from the norm. Emotionally, today’s Emos are known to be extra emotional, sensitive, shy and definitely introverted as it has a lot of associations with depression and suicide.

From a marketing perspective, it’ll be very hard to push their boundaries. Personally, I believe excluding their t-shirts, their other fashion symbols have little relation with their true characters. So I think targeting their mental state, meaning targeting depression and suicide will be a lot more wise than targeting a fashion trend.

Hip Hop – Hip hop is a very diverse culture, it accepts a heavy range of originality as long as it has some relation to the struggle in the ghetto. Homie is a term often used to describe someone who belongs in the hiphop culture. Homie is a slang for “homeboy”. Stereotypically, homies often oversize whatever they wear and it often relates around sports clothing (sneakers in particular). Like Emo and Punk, hip hop is a culture often based around anti-popular culture. It originated in the African American community, decades ago during the struggle of the civil rights movement. While every culture had a specific style that they can proudly distinguish themselves from, the African American culture at the time didn’t have anything due to racism. Thus, disc jockeying and MCing (Rap) was forcefully introduced into a culture because it was something they invented that was very close to disco which they love at the time. And due to the poverty of black communities, this culture has since be heavily related to poverty, ghetto and a hatred to polices and governments (known to them as pigs and haters respectively).

However, in recent years a new trend of hip hop has arrived. The dress sense has become so much more elegant and luxurious. Skater-boy clothes are really fashionable due to the influence of Pharrell Williams and Lupe Fiasco. Expensive jewellery is still a heavy sign of power in the hip hop world, always viewed as major stature. Retro is also a heavy trend of the hip hop world in recent times. From a marketing standpoint, tackling the hip hop culture is no longer so obvious. The culture has expanded into such a different range that it’s really hard to see any similarities between modern hip hop and the stereotypical retro style. I believe we should try go retro and refurnish its original designs.

Boredom is not all bad.

Many creative people have found that even being bored silly is not all bad. Anna Quindlen, in an article for Newsweek entitled “Doing Nothing Is Something,” talks about summers as a child. “How boring it was. Of course, it was the making of me as a human being and a writer. Downtime is where we become ourselves, looking into the middle distance, kicking at the curb, lying on the grass or sitting on the stoop and staring at the tedious blue of the summer sky. I don’t believe you can write poetry, or compose music, or become an actor without downtime, and plenty of it, a hiatus that passes for boredom but is really the quiet moving of the wheels inside that fuels creativity. And that to me is one of the saddest things about the lives of American children today. Soccer leagues, acting classes, tutors...our children are as overscheduled as we are, and that is saying something.”

In fact, boredom is credited with being the driving force behind many scientific discoveries, inventions, works of art, and even great acts of silliness. We can all be grateful Isaac Newton was lying around under an apple tree at a crucial moment. Many people, bored with the life that was expected of them, have used boredom as a launching pad into the risks necessary for a life more suited to their gifts and talents. And it was on a long boring train trip that J.K. Rowling was surprised by the “sight” of an imaginary boy with unruly hair, round glasses and a scar walking towards her up the aisle. That was, she said, the first time she envisioned young Harry Potter.

Making boredom popular culture through advertisements and video content

Hey guys this is an advertisement I analysed as a part of my Popular Culture theory subject, it points out some of the elements used in contemporary advertisements such as ‘Fetishism’ to build an enticing advertising campaign to sell the product. I thought that some of these techniques may assist us in creating some solid advertising content for promoting boredom to the public as an improvement to ones lifestyle and something that should be a part of daily practice.

This advertisement extract from ‘For Him Magazine’ (FHM) issue 93, 01/2006, marketing David Beckham’s personal fragrance and cologne for men, is what I believe to be a consummate example of Popular culture and an ideology of the male physique and fashion sense. John Storey explicates “Popular culture is simply culture which is widely favoured or well liked by many people”. David Beckham’s worldwide popularity and renown as a sports icon is enough to retail any contemporary product. Despite the obvious benefits and succession that this product will appropriate from Beckham’s fame, the advertisement accommodates various semiotic signs that are utilized to entice consumers to indulge themselves with the product of interest.

The ‘A4’, portrait formatted advertisement, depicts an erotic, stylised, masculine David Beckham, in the foreground, outfitted with a sheik partially unbuttoned black shirt, revealing flesh. His libidinous outfit is reflected with his strong alluring facial expression. The product itself, bottled in an elegant, exorbitant looking glass container, is placed in the bottom right corner of the composition, complete with its own label and complementary text, above the product, emphasising the name of the fragrance itself. The background opens the composition with a vast plane consisting mostly of monochromatic clouds, contrasted by a silhouette of a natural landscape at the base of the advertisement. The structure, elements and signs within each advertisement are vital to conveying the full extent of subject matter and message of the composition.

Roland Barthes explains “If all these signs are removed from the image, we are still left with a certain informational matter; deprived of all knowledge, I continue to ‘read’ the image, to ‘understand’ that it assembles in a common space a number of identifiable objects, not merely shapes and colours”. Barthes is referring to the fact that without the basis of an advertisement, being the elements that give it cultural, historical, sentimental or any kind of external value (‘signs’). The advertisement continues to represent objects that relate to each other, which carry specific purpose. Many ‘signs’ add to the value and ‘fantasy’ that this publication portrays. Most notable are the dark tones that are so dominate, assisting to define its masculinity and sex appeal, hinting the idea that if one were to acquire and apply this product one may assume the sexual integrity of David Beckham. The contrast in tone between the brightly coloured ‘Instinct’ bottle and its dim surroundings, including Beckham himself, constructs the small bottle as the focal point of the composition. Small in comparison to the rest of the scene, the product reminds me of a picture in a storybook, in a sense that the product is an object of desire and the surrounding scene is the story of the benefits that it will grace upon the consumer. As if by using the product, the consumer will in some part assume the identity and appeal of David Beckham. Despite the fact that many sports fans would indulge in this product simply because it is related to such a high profile athlete and sex symbol, David Beckham seemingly, personally uses and endorses the product. This would cause many young men to declare “if it’s good enough for Becks, its good enough for me”. Beckham’s manner almost appears like the product is a gift for men to use, as an improvement to ones self and an advantage to ones sex appeal, something that any man would desire.

Beckham’s confronting, confident gaze, and revealing unbuttoned, black shirt, flaunts sexuality, and in this advertisement, can only be seen as a reflection of the effectiveness of the product. Dark muted colours are arousing and mysterious, black, particularly in clothing is of a sexual nature, and together with the open, dark, mysterious sky as well as Beckham’s strong masculinity, the fantasy that ones sexual aspirations can be achieved with the application of this fragrance is created.

The product itself appears highly exclusive, with its own eloquently designed label, boasting the personal logo of David Beckham, which again provides the consumer with a fanciful personal connection to Beckham. Not only is a refined text form used on the product but is also boldly employed in contrasting white text, providing the cologne a clear name, identity and purpose. Repetition is exercised in text form, surrounding the title ‘Instinct’, in semi-transparent text, here, alluring and passionate words are utilized to provide the product with character in an effort to aid the consumer to relate to it and grasp its apparent identity.

Barthes believes that “if the distinction permits us to describe the structure of the image in a simple and coherent fashion, and if this description paves the way for an explanation of the role of the image in society, we will take it to be justified”. I understand that Barthes is acknowledging the fact that if we recognise a product in an advertisement to have a place in our lifestyle, then we will except it as part of culture and something to be desired and consumed. This is evident in David Beckham’s cologne advertisement where in the construction of its fantasy it is attempting to hide the fact that the product is merely a glorified perfume for men, a non-essential indulgence that without the masquerade, would not be a subject of popular culture. This sort of personal accessory is dependent on the image that it is given by advertisement through iconic and linguistic messages.

The iconic message that is delivered by the perrsona of David Beckham is by far this advertisement and products greatest asset. One can only assume that a product brought forth by such a colossal benefactor of popular culture, could not be a failure, particularly because the product will be launched under the identity of David Beckham. His qualities, succession persona will be present in the product, automatically appealing to the fanfare that surrounds him and the culture and lifestyle he is a part of. The linguistic message can be found in the stylised, repetitive text, surrounding the title “Instinct” which in itself provides the product with a crude yet masculine identity. These semi-transparent words attempt to provide the fragrance with character, encouraging the consumer to make a link between this cologne and such phrases as; ‘Fury’, ‘Defy’, ‘Tempest’, ‘Chaos’, ‘Calm’, ‘Truth’, ‘Control’, ‘Peace’. A significant part of the fantasy of this advertisement is to believe that this cologne has any relationship with the meaning of these key words.

Conclusively I think that this advertisement is successful mainly due to the prestige of David Beckham himself combined with sexually powerful imagery and atmosphere. Rousing the desire of the consumer to imitate and become part of contemporary fashion and popular culture which is further driven by the construction of oneself in accordance to such exclusive commodities.

If we want to construct boredom as a subculture this may be one of the ways we could do it, through a video documentary...this documentary breaks down some of the elements that are involved when a subculture is created and features some interesting interviews with teenagers that are part of these subcultures...take a look at this;

Here's a news report on the Emo subculture, this report demonstrates some of the beliefs that this culture entails and reveals the advertising mediums that it has spread across to reach the youth of society.

An old school documentary on the Punk subculture, this video demonstrates some of the issues parents have with their children becoming punks and joining the culture. It also links art (in the form of street graffiti) to the culture and how this provides an identity of each individual, as kids start to become known by their 'TAG' rather than their name.

a spare concept:
Helping old people or patients to complete their last wishes

The puppet masters are going to choose some last wishes of old people/patients (real stories) and make them as missions for the participants to complete. Funny and interesting tasks will be delievered to the participants, only samll wishes will be chosen, instead of sad ones. The aim is to make people feel happy and warm, it can be touching as well.

Since a group of people is working together to complete these missions, it is a way to help others with actual actions, instead of just donating money to the charities. May be they are just very tiny tasks, but still make people happy.

Example wish1: wants to meet David Beckham before he dies or get the signature of him
task: find someone who knows him (like the movie "My Date with Drew)

Example wish2: wants to find the best friend in primary who have lost the contact
task: try to call the people on yellow pages with the same name......
